Splurged for this game today, got the guide for it too, its a nice hard bound book with tons of sweet from software style artwork in it. ‎  If any fans of Demons souls are out there, I recommend it so far :)

Is Dark Souls an actual sequel to Demon Souls?

Yes it is sir, and I just finished my first play session.

All I can say is the folks complaining about DS not being like KF finally got the point across to from software. ‎  Instead of the terribly linear stages in Demon souls, Dark Souls is a fully open environment with literally nothing stopping your progression except for enemy strengths and fear of the unknown. ‎  I spent 2 hours on it, and I can say the game plays a lot better (youre not nearly as wimpy) and the overall expansive universe brought tears to my eyes thinking of good ole KF2 (KF1 US).

It definitely has much more of the KF spirit in it, I recommend it to anyone and its multi platform this time around.

Bleh, I tried for 3 hours to join a friends game and vice versa...they made it much harder than it was in demons souls, though i havent a clue why. ‎  It seems to me the game would support a very fun co-op play mode if they would have allowed for it.

Here is Namco's official (and retarded) response:

"SolutionDue to several contacts we've received from users confused as to how the summoning feature works in game, we have provided this list to help.

Conditions for summoning (White Sign Soapstone):
The host (person who's game world will be used) must be human. The client (person joining the game) can either be human or undead.

The client’s level must fall within 10% (above or below) of the host’s level. Generally, this example formula should give you a good idea on whether you will be able to join: ‎  (LC x 1.1) ? LH ? (LC x 0.9), where is LC the level of the client and LH is the level of the host. For example, if the level of the host is 20, then they will only be able to summon players who are levels 18 to 22.

The area boss (Taurus Demon, Bell Gargoyles, Moonlight Butterfly, etc…) in the host’s world must still be alive. A client can still be summoned even if the client has already defeated their own area boss.

The host must not have placed down a summoning sign. Summoning signs from other players will not appear in a host’s world if the host also has placed a summoning sign down. This is to prevent a network conflict of the host joining someone else's game world while the clients are trying to join the host's game world.

After successfully summoning, the client will return to their world if the area boss is defeated, the client is killed or the host is killed.
Also, please note that there are several different servers/lobbies that are being used for Dark Souls, so you may not be able to summon a specific friend into your game even if you adhere to the steps above. We can only recommend that you follow the steps above for the best chance at being able to join a specific friends' game."

This game is punitive in alot of ways. Like i afore mentioned, i got stuck in the tomb of giants amongst high level creatures. The only way out was guarded by one giant skeleton, while two archers fired at me... So each time i tried to get up the ladder i got shot down...
After restarting with a new character i had to go through being killed again and again, trying to progress but finding it tough.

I cant help you with co-op because ive yet to play a co-op game. I havent any soapstones, the only multiplayer ive experienced is invading.

Hmm no soapstone?

Did you beat the taurus demon yet? ‎  The npc just beyond his area gives you the white soapstone.

Beat it last night by going back to the starting area. I'll keep out of the catacombs for a while.

Nasty capra demon kept killing me Eek, so after smashing its demons i lured it up the stairs. When it fell down i used the plunge attack Nemo_death (r1 on the ps3) jumping off the ledge to deal nasty damage back. I'm way further now, just wanted to add this tip incase anyone else was stuck.
