Enemies and Difficulty

I can't get past the first 5 mins of the game. I get the dagger (Bane) and equip it, equip the boots, and go marching off. I don't have gold so I can't buy anything, and the ants completely kill me. It seems like I might be hitting them 50 times and they don't die! If I go into town the guards mess me up. It seems to me that there has to be something I'm missing, but I'm not sure what it is. I had the same problem in King's Field, until I loaded the saved game with a fully armed and armored character.

So, my question is this: how do I kill something at the absolute start of the game?

You need to attack when the stamina bar is fully charged, otherwise you do reduced damaged. A good strategy is to attack, then back off and wait for the stamina bar to charge, then move in and attack again; repeat until it's dead. You also generally want to strafe around to the back of enemies while using a combination of attacking and magic to stunlock them.
