I'm not completely sure what it uses exactly, I noticed there was a lot of files extracted using the KF tool, they were just corrupted... I was was mostly just playing around because I'd just got my copy of Shadow Tower... USA - Europe postal can take a darn long time...
From what I can tell, it makes use of different BPP files for different elements... Pictures for monsters in the V.S menu are all 16BPP, the weapon and armor textures are all 8BPP... Most of the files are actually in .TIM format though, I'm not exactly sure why they made some files in the same format they used for KF, and others in regular TIM...
With KF tool I managed to use the extracted textures as a reference to make some HD versions of KF1(US) textures, one of them ended up pretty nice (used on the lighthouse). The other one is okay, but it just doesn't tile very well.
I'll see what I can do about making a preview with the West Shore model I was making when I've got time and a new keyboard.
