Adding water to a map?

I am pretty new to SoM and would like to know how exactly I would go about adding water to my maps. I know that I would have to import some models but that is where I get lost, can anybody set up a tutorial on how to do this (preferably using pre-made water, as I am no good at modeling)? Thanks.

Verdite is probably the expert on this, but as far as I know, there are two ways to add water to a map- as a Map Piece or as an Object.

Using Map Piece water is FAR easier for large bodies of water, but Map Pieces don't support semi-transparent textures so they look solid. They're placed on the map just like any other map Piece tile would be.

When using Object water, ‎  it can be translucent. but you have to place a lot of separate water Objects if you are making a large body of water. SoM has a cap on the maximum number of object for each map, so they are suitable mostly for rivers, puddles or ponds etc. ‎  Sorry that the water sheets on that site are messy; they were one of the earliest things I made so I didn't even know what I was doing Doh The .MDO and .TXR files go in ‎  the "...\DATA\OBJ\MODEL" folder, and the rest (PRF files) go in "...\DATA\OBJ\prof" folder. After that, they should show up in the Parameter editor on the "OBJECTS" tab named "(who would have guessed!) ‎  "Water..." ‎  Your best bet is to use the water Object named "Water 2mx2m", but the name is actually wrong. They are technically 6m x 6m. ‎  An "m" ‎  is roughly one meter in-game. Each map Piece tile is 2mx2m. ‎  So you would place a water Object on every third map Piece to have them join each other seamlessly. The water sheets are set low to around -1m by default.

Attached is a picture of water Objects as Placed on a map. Notice the "every third" spacing of the green Object dots.

And also also an ingame picture of water map Pieces (opaque) to show what they would be like. ‎  Wink

I've added all files to each of the correct folders like you said but they aren't showing up in objects for some reason Smash2, not sure what's going on. ‎

Have you created a .prf file using the objedit tool?

You'l need to look for it in objedit then save it as a .prf. Then create it in the parameter editor.

There are .prf files that come with the download, I have placed them in a folder named "prof" and the mdo & .txr files are in a folder named "MODEL". When I go into the parameter editor though, they still aren't showing up.

They are either in the items folder by accident or they are in the obj folder and you cant identify them in the parameter editor.

What you need to do is...

Remember the .mdo name that came with the download, open objedit.

Type something in the object name field. Something you will remember like KijiruX water.

Where it says model file name, click change. That object you remembered will be on the list that appears. Find it, then if its water the object type you set up should be normal, the size cylinder or cube (for water it doesnt matter.) finally height width and length all at zero.

The program objedit is attached incase you need it. You should have it if you downloaded the som tools.
