On going SoM questions (and maybe answers?)

#1
I have so many questions I can't seem to find the answers for in the SoM guide, so I have took the libery of creating this thread.

Q.? ‎  I have this idea of creating a NPC that once you have healed him, he'll give you a map.
? ? ? I'm guessing I go into 'EVENT LEAF SETUP', but from there I get lost :(
... ‎  also, what is all this talk of 'counter'? example "Set Player Parameter In Counter"

Thanks

Alright, I was going to write out what all you need to do to get this working, instead I have just created a quick sample project that should cover everything you need to know.

Excellent example Todd, I was typing a response, glad you went with a sample instead; much easier to understand and it covers counters too.

Thanks dmpdesign

Got the general idea, just a few gray areas in general concept...

1) 'Control active leaf' means go to next event leaf summary in 'event setup'?

2) 'Counter list' or 'counter value' this reference to 'counter' I'm still not clear on what 'counter' really stands for?

Thanks for the help, I know this must be a drag having to explain this to a newbee!

Should we ever consider renaming this stuff? I'm not positive how the text is drawn on the buttons and stuff, but ideally we will be able to devise a rewriter for all the different tools like I've done with the exe, so we can setup a proper i18n system so there is a straight forward way for people to translate SOM into their own language. A rewriter isn't limited to how ever much space is available in the executable image. So it might be possible to properly translate some words like "REGSTER".

I'm not sure how it would be best to translate things. If you wanted a technical sense though Counter is accurate, Register might actually be a better word. Leaf is a confusing word. Page or State or something else would probably be better. Leaf technically means like the graph that forms under things in the piece setup dialog. So technically Event Leaf actually makes more sense when referring to what we call an Event now. Leaf is a better term though, because the full event can encompass many leafs and counters, or an event can also properly mean anything that happens the player sees, like a message or door opening or anything (but not an instruction) ...in which case scenario is a better word I suppose, though without any technical analog (still useful in discussion however)

Button width is still something of a limitation to word length.

On the other hand I don't necessarily believe the language should be technical. I think it's important to have a unified way of addressing concepts however. So I wouldn't encourage multiple translations in the same language for mere aesthetic preference.

PS: I vote for Monsters over Enemies. I realize not everything has to be a "monster" but neither does it have to be an "enemy". Monster just sounds more KF like to me ("Object" feels flat too) Ninja

Where exactly do you edit the 'counter list'. Seems I can just enter any name/info by clicking the counter list button in various fields and just clicking 'enter'.
O.k let's do it like this:
In the HealNPC game in this thread (& BTW love the humour) what or where is the counter 1 refering to ? is it the door ?

^Has anyone thought of making a collection of tutorial projects? Like samples in an SDK?
