SOM round 2

#1
I think I'd like to try this again but before I do I've got a few questions:

1. Would it be possible to add a new damage type? I'd like it better if there was a Dark damage type and change Holy to Light. With only Holy it makes the game 1 sided. I personally like game where you can choose your own path, not be only evil or only good. A Dark damage type would help with this.

2. Would it at all be possible to make spells so they can be equipped like weapons? Example: you would need to equip a book or scroll to use a spell.
this would allow you to be able to find and buy/sell spells. In my opinion it would make the game a little more unique.

3. Is there a way to change the HP/MP bar and compass?

That all the questions I've got....for now
Yeah, I'm still around. I haven't much to say anymore however I do lurk around here. Ninja

I am glad to see you have a renewed interest! ‎  Hopefully some of the new site features that are coming down the pike will assist you.

To answer your questions, I will simply address what SOM as a standalone system can do, there may be outside development to give you the capability to do more, but that is something handled by SomEx that is being developed by another site... \<span> site blocked, contact your administrator ‎  you may inquire to the webmaster there if he intends to add such features.

1 - currently you can modify the game.exe to assign whatever name you want to the various elements in the attack/defense columns. ‎  Meaning (like dark destiny did) you could rename the word 'holy' to 'dark' or 'light'. ‎  Since you will likely want all the regular elements, light, fire, wind, water, earth you will need a 6th...there are 3 'physical elements in the attack/defense tables being used for slash, stab and crushing. ‎  You could in theory rename something like 'stab' to 'dark' and use that as a means to track the dark attributes of an item. ‎

As far as I know, all the stats are equivalent, meaning one point of stab does the same damage as one point in fire, the only different is the 3 physical abilities are also affected by strength where as the 5 magical abilities are affected by intellect. ‎  So if you dont really care about that, by all means convert a physical attribute to 'dark' and rename 'holy' to 'light' in your .exe.

2 - unfortunately no...not as SOM is now. ‎  YOu could create an item that can cast spells however and make it a 0 magic point casting cost if you wanted to always be able to use it for magic

3 - yes, you can modify the graphics i can show you where they reside in the output game folder.

You could have a book item in posession, and learn spells from an npc / object / always on event through a simple counter if you had that item.

If you want i can give you guidance to set it up, its fairly straightforward.

Ya Ben, I didnt even think of that!

That would be cool btw scott if you tracked what books/scrolls were in inventory and modified what spells you could have based on that.

Question 2 wasn't too important but I do like the idea of using a book or scroll on an NPC "teacher" Example: you found a scroll of fire, and you know an NPC that will teach you fire magic. Use the scroll on the NPC and you get a fire spell.

A new solution to 1 would be to change Holy to Arcane, and remove dark/light all together. Arcane would be a generic type of magic damage and would maybe have spells that will have other uses if possible. I've got some great ideas that I hope SOM will let me do. Well then, back to messing around on a "test map"

btw: how would I rename Holy anyway?

Scott, the renaming of that would actually be done in the very final executable when your game is finished.

What you would want to do is take the output game.exe that SOM creates when you have it generate your runtime, and use a hex editor to modify all instances of the word "Holy" to "Arcane"

I can show you how to do it sometime when you are getting ready to show off your game=)

Scott, Changing the MP/HP Compass is as easy as pie, all you do is alter the files in your c:\programfiles\Swordofmoonlight\Data\Menu , Folder..... the files listed as gage 1,2 ect are the various gages used by the game keep in mind that you have limited room to work with , and "Black is transparent", alter the file ( save a copyof the origanal, Of course) save it in the same spot and presto easy gages , here is an example I have of an older one I did.......Hope this helps, and welcome aboard.........
