Short answer: You should probably half it to .25 units each step.
Will hopefully have a better tutorial up soon. Could you link the specific part of the tutorial that mentions the 0.5 units?
Longer answer: hitbox behavior can vary wildly in SoM and it also can vary on speed. I've had very small objects become impassable because player speed was too low.
