Windows 7

I really have no clue if anyone made a topic about this. I've heard many good things about Windows 7 saying that its better then XP and especially Vista (anything is better then Vista if you ask me). I wanted to ask if anyone here tried SOM on a Windows 7 OS as of yet and to see how it runs. Cause you all already know that the preview box in the map editor in Vista doesn't preview anything, so we Vista users are building blind (which is why I am trying to get it to work in Windows 98 using Virtual PC).

So lemme know what your experienced with SOM in Windows 7. I am really curious as to how it handles. And by the way, been a Kings Field fan since 1996. Nice to meet you guys. lol

I'm sure others can better clue you in. But basically 7 is like Vista on all but the most superficial level (minus some ridiculous bugs / plus some new ones) and anyway Som runs identically (at least nothing is worse) ...if you have a Professional/Ultimate license you can download the "XP Mode" Virtual PC setup from MS's website, but you will still need a working XP disc set in order to add features you probably want like East Asian Languages.

Afaik we're planning to push virtual machines as an all-in-1 recommended solution for everyone (with everything wrapped up in a convenient SDK) but no one is really working on that end (I have my hands pretty full as it is / am not going to be working with editors for a while so...)

So you are on the right track anyway. I can't remember the pros/cons of a 98 vs. 2k vs. XP virtual machine setup. I think 2k and XP are pretty safe, 98 would be nice if it works because I expect it would be a lot less "bloated" (ie. easier to emulate)


EDITED: We can definitely help you with the Virtual PC setup. The major points are you will want MS Gothic on your system and probably East Asian Language support. Then you will want to map your physical harddisk to a network drive on the VM. Copy the registry section for Som over to the vm's registry and change the instDir value so it points to the location on the networked map drive (in other words now you have just one installation of Som shared between your machine and the vm)

PS: We can also help you make a shortcut so you can test your project without going thru the editors (with hardware acceleration / without file lock probs)

I do not currently have a VM session uploaded though I can probably trim one down and get it back up if you are interested in trying it.

If you do happen to nab windows 7 and try out the xp or other Virtual Machine on it, please let me know how it functions. ‎  VMWare is a nice substitute (and may be better altogether I am not sure) but it does not allow you to utilize any graphics card functionality at all, which just adds a different sort of annoyance to building/testing.

Well as of right now I am messing around with Virtual PC with Windows 98 installed and it works fine. I linked my Vista to the VPC so I can transfer files and such. I tried getting it to work but it kept coming up as an error. I have to try and enable East Asian Language on Windows 98 which I don't know how to. I am going to have to search on Google on how to do this. But yeah, the best way to make games easy is to emulate an older OS. I know it is sad, but its the most effective way to do it.

What I am going to do now is load up my Virtual PC and see what kind of solutions I can come up with. I will let you guys know. Also, when I do indeed get a copy of Windows 7 or anyone else here has, I will inform everyone on how it operates.

Ok this is the problem i am having with SOM in Windows 98. Opening the program from Main, the program says, "Main001 is not found in the installation folder". This is where I am stuck. And 98 also will not take the registry file and I forgot how to manually place registry files in windows 98. This is where I am stuck...

You'll need to use regedit then. Don't worry, the Som registry is next to nothing.

Ok, but my main problem here is the fact that the program won't start which is perplexing me right now. If I can get this software to work in Windows 98, then I can advise everyone to use Virtual PC instead of XP or Vista. Ugh this is a pain. But I will find a way to make SOM work flawlessly. Somehow.

It works pretty well with XP. I'm not sure if DirectX might have less issues under 98 (btw, if you are willing to install the drivers that come with Som on pre-Vista versions of Windows you might not have to ever disable DirectX etc)

I think most of us have experience using the Som editors under VM. You'll be the first to do it with 98 though possibly. I would not even know where to find a 98 set iso these days

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits and the programs works almost flawlessly. I am sure that the same flaws appear on XP and others so the answer to the question: does it work for Win7 is - YES.
