No I did all that. I believe the bridge was probably there, but disappeared after it was built because I didn't use it. I may hop on again and try, but I was very thorough. It derailed my game so I ended up quitting.
You just keep pounding away on him and he'll die. Takes a while haha.

It sounds like your game just plain glitched up. I've heard that there's an NPC who won't help you if you've murdered anyone, but if you got the "I built a bridge for you" dialogue, it should be there, period.
You may have to restart the game. Fortunately this isn't really that far in (it may seem like it, but King's Field games are the kind that move a lot faster once you know where everything is--so something that took hours on your first go will take fifteen minutes on your second).
