Problem that has halted my progress.... *SOLVED!* - Hguols - 2011-06-04

I did a few things between building on SOM, one of which was a graphics card driver update, installed a new game, and installed a program called PhysX (to help run the new game)

I'm not sure if it was one of those things or not, but none of the map pieces display in my editor. ‎ (the upper right square that samples what the map piece looks like is either blank/black or stuck on a non-rotatable map piece #1)

I've tried restarting the program.
I've tried rebooting my PC. ‎
I've tried reinstalling the TOOL folder.

The map pieces are not corrupt, as test map works fine.... ‎ I'm just flying blind and can't see what I'm placing. ‎ (as I can't remember what each piece "looks" like just from the icon)

Any ideas how I can start seeing things again? ‎ ._.

EDIT: ‎  The solution is at this post. ‎  ( ^ - ^)

The plot thickens. ‎  I tried a re-install, and it said access is denied in the BAT file.

That's rather interesting since I'm running my PC as an administrator and have "never notify" selected in my UAC.

Sounds like your directx likely got updated when you installed the new game.

Are you using windows xp?

If so, run dxdiag and disable the 3d acceleration options and give the map editor a whirl.

If youre on vista/7 we will have to find another way to assist you.

Windows 7 64bit.

Was working great. ‎  I have no idea what's going on.

I would also like to mention that previewing map pieces in the editor does nothing either.... ‎  so placing further map pieces would be virtually impossible.

Todd. ‎  I'm reading quite a few google articles about access problems with Program Files within Windows 7.

I tried a manual install to C:\ ....but I still get the same problem. ‎  I'm probably missing something in your bat file that's more than just files to location and reg entry.

A better question is why the preview ever worked for you in the first place. This sounds like the standard 'preview' problem that everyone with a fast video card has been having. ‎ Since you're using PhysX, I expect you have an Nvidia video card? I wouldn't think the directX update caused a problem because Win7 ships with a newer version of DX than my XP PC has (and it has the same problem). Maybe some version of nvida driver doesn't have the issue. You might try 'roll back driver' in the Device manager.

Re: Problem that has halted my progress.... - Hguols - 2011-06-04

Actually, I don't have an NVidia card. ‎  PhysX is an Nvidia program, but its not necessarily for their hardware. ‎
So I've been told, it has a "software mode" that will work with anything.... ‎  and the latest game I bought requires it.

I've since uninstalled PhysX, removed from registry and rebooted. ‎

The problem remains. ‎  :(

Re: Problem that has halted my progress.... - Hguols - 2011-06-04

SOLVED.

I updated my graphics card driver whenever I installed my new game. ‎  (I try to keep drivers updated)
I rolled-back to my old driver. ‎  No problem.

SOM works like it used to. ‎  Like a charm.

So, I've stayed up late being obsessed devoted to this, so.... ‎  I'll get some sleep and try to finish my map tomorrow. ‎  -_-

I should have guessed that PhysX had a software emulation mode since it is so common on cross-hardware games. It's good that you got it fixed. Maybe your information could help other people with the problem. Can you post which video card your PC uses and which driver version works with SoM?

It's sad how many old games this 'hardware acceleration' issue has broken.
