IRC chat integration to the site

Well it says its a "chatbox" on the forum site.

It fits that little forum just right because you can chat and read the forum at the same time on the same page.

What it looks to me is just a script.... ‎  probably with some behind the scenes goodies.

If it's real chat it would have to be an embedded application of some sort I would think. Which would have to interact with some chat server. My bet is it's a shoutbox though.

It might be possible to do something like chat via CGI. For some reason... I really don't know enough about CGI to say.

What's the difference between a chatbox and a shoutbox?

Looking at the source on the page I'm talking about, it shows multiple script src's to .js files. ‎  Looks like I'm right so far, with javascript being the source. ‎  (I remember using javascript chats in the past) ‎ 

I'm wondering if this right here is something that could just be copied and pasted? (edited a little of course)

On the hguols website, I got .js, .swf, .xml files and a script to embed a little myspace-ish player right in the media section of the page. ‎

A shoutbox you just shoot something up at it, and occasionally the box updates itself to let you know what others have "shouted" at it. A chat is a time-stamped two-way conversation. A shoutbox is really not good for a website, because if people have a page open, it will be updating itself all day long by some fixed interval. There are other ways to implement a shoutbox, but basically they are all one way streets. They can't be realtime, because if so every person viewing the webpage would be constantly bombarding the server with requests for updates. Also a shoutbox is on the website (stored in a database) so it wouldn't help to let people know what's happening if the website is down.

Javascript means you're working with a shoutbox. A JS shoutbox will probably work by AJAX (asynchronous jscript and xml) but there are other ways such as keeping the connection alive (would be bad if the connection timed out though because your box would die)

Javascript just runs safe scripts from the person who is reading a page's computer. It can rearrange the webpage at it's most fundamental level, but it can't do unsafe stuff like open sockets on your computer for chatting or access your computer's files.

Why not just use existing IM software like https://www.easymessage.net/
and make a link to that, and a link to memers IM addresses ....??

Hmmm, unless you want an SOM rss feed....that would be neat actually....but if
the site goes down....so does the feed. ‎

There's already a "SOM rss" feed for this bbs, and there will be one with the new WordPress based website (obviously)

It's also used a lot more than I would have expected for IM hookups. If you're not in the group you're missing out. There is a limit of 20 spots however. So if you don't get into the first group you'll have to start a new telephone tree like spinoff group. 20 is probably the limit for group IM chat. Any email will do.

Live chat's just fine with me. We all could use it. as well as post here about som, anyway's I'll do both.
