Fences and Books

#1
Hello, first post, nice to meet you all.

Anyways, I managed to purchase a copy of SoM online the other day and after a few days of thinking and fooling around, I've come up with a game I'd like to make. ‎  The only thing is, I need a fence or something similar for one of my maps. ‎  I remember in KF3 there were some low broken walls that could be used as a fence but I don't recall seeing them in the map editor. ‎  I tried using the invisible wall piece in the map editor but that overwrites the ground tile. ‎  I've tried using an object, like the iron bars, as a fence but whenever you activate the iron bars, they act like a door so that's out. ‎  Does anyone have an ideas? ‎  Am I using the invisible wall the wrong way?

Eventing out the iron bars might be possible but that would use up a bit of event space, I think.

I'm also looking for a book object/item. ‎  This Japanese site (https://www.mscom.or.jp/bowcat/SofM/index.html) has a few books available but the links are dead. ‎  Going through the Internet Archive lets you download the water texture but the books are still dead. ‎  Are there any free books available?

You came to the right place my friend!

First of all congrats on getting SOM, I am still looking for an original box copy to add to my collection.

For your issue that you posted about, a fence object is definately where you want to go. ‎  The map pieces are definitely far too limited in number to be usable in the situations you are going to come across while building a game.

I have a fence object that was created by Martin (darchangel) that may suit your purposes.

Download it here: https://swordofmoonlight.com/SOMTools/Cu.../fence.zip

Inside are three files, you should place the files in the following locations:

fence.prf - C:\Program Files\KF\SOM\Data\Objects\prof
fence.mdo and fence.txr go - C:\Program Files\KF\SOM\Data\Objects\Model

Now...if that model wont do what you need let me know and we can probably get you a different fence model to use.

Glad to have you aboard!

Here is a book and bookshelf I made:

They arent the greatest but they may help.

If I may, go to [url]www.swordofmoonlight.com[\url] and go to the installation link there, I uploaded an SOM installer that has all the english conversoin that john did as well as a ton of new items/objects and map pieces that have been custom made. ‎  Just load the installer and it will write all the files where they need to go.

That was a swift response. ‎  Thanks. ‎  I'll give the fence and book a shot when I get back home. ‎  The only add-ons I've got for SoM are the official From Software ones and the water texture so I am comparatively lacking to the English install.

Wowww, someone else actually found a copy of SoM online. How much trouble was your experience? If it was anything like John's (or my failed attempts) at the least I think it's safe to say you're committed enough to count on for some company Rainbow

PS: About using doors for fences. I've never actually needed such a fence on the ground (err actually I have thought about making a log door fence recently) ...but I use doors that can't be opened way more often than I use doors you can. No need to use an event. Just set the lock to switch mode, and set the switch to a counter that will always be zero. The only drawback here is the message that says "sealed" or something by default will popup, but I white out almost all (if not all) of these messages anyway. You could replace it with something more generic like "you cannot pass" I guess. Another drawback is most of the door objects for some reason are missing polygons on top. So if your fence is lower than eye level it will look weird. I added such fencing to Tom's bridges in some of the DoM maps, but they're overhead, so you can't see on top of them (and the top is unaccessible)

^I really wish an effort could be made to make SoMs models more solid than they are. Having the extra hidden polygons isn't gonna slow down any hardware accelerated architecture these days. Ie. why shouldn't all walls be two sided, just in case? SoM does have a pesky sort of weak occlusion system, but it could probably be hacked out if we understood the map file formats a little better 8)

I hadn't thought about using a counter to seal it and blanking the sealed message. ‎  I did notice the lack of a top on bars though. ‎  If you could rotate around the x or z axis it wouldn't be a problem but you can't. ‎  Even so, there are a few sealed doors and chests I was thinking about so blanking out the message would make this slightly confusing because I want the player to know that the seal is there.

My copy cost 12,400 yen from Yahoo Auctions and came with everything, including the receipt when purchased by the original owner. ‎  Apparently, you can still order SoM by telephoning From Software's sales department for a slightly lower price but that could just be out of date information.

The fence and book work perfectly, thanks again. ‎  That fence is exactly what I was looking for, just perfect. ‎  Another question though. ‎  Can I copy the model, texture and prof file (profile?) to the item folder to be able to use the book as an item? ‎  Also, are the book files book.prf, book.mdo, and bookcover.txr?

Edit: ‎  Thinking a little bit more, simply copying them probably wouldn't work.
Edit #2: ‎  But loading it up in ItemEdit seems too :D
Edit #3: ‎  Though not quite as well as I thought it would. ‎  ItemEdit seemed to work alright but loading it in the Parameter Editor doesn't work. ‎  Couldn't read dxr001 txr, eh? ‎  Time to do some digging.
Edit #4: ‎  Hahaha, the textures weren't all there. ‎  Duh.

Ya, anything that works as an object can be converted to an item.

Like you said, just load the objects files into their appropriate spot in the items folder and use itemedit.exe to create the new item prf file.

actually let me be a little more precise, since the question will likely arise.

doing the above will allow you to make 'usable' items but not equipment.

if you want to start making equipment let me know, i have that tutorial section just about done.
