Noob wanting to make a game

Very good stuff here, I really apologize if you are using my cliff set for the difficult to understand icons and such.

I was such a noob when I made that stuff that I just didnt know any better, was very new territory for me in many ways.

Someday Id like to contribute better stuff.

All of you guys though, your work looks great, so happy to see more people making custom projects, thats what SOM is all about, the uniqueness is gonna make each of your games so fun to play!

the snow cliff set is real easy xd its the original thats a lil tough and really its only the lil icons.. ‎  bur im doin oki xd and ty ‎  im lovin mesq.. one question.. is it good to get the newer versions of mesq and mesq le or would the translation patches not work fer those?

I think i have an idea of what i wanna do.. ‎  it might be new to the som arena but the original idea was from an old game called zelda ‎  the 4 seasons.. basically a season change in som where certain items areas and what not can only be gotten to in winter/ or summer ect

it wouldnt in theory be that hard to do either ‎  just a lot of map work for the areas that would change... ‎  one map per season..one could also use the concept of time as well ... ‎  having a tree seed planted then travel forward 100 years to climb said tree ect.. ‎  with all these som peeps commin up with ideas ‎  i figured i should add to the pot..

Im happy already with the underwater areas like in the ancient city ‎  but also air pockets that can prolong ur time underwater untill u have the right skill to stay under indefinatly... ‎  the only thing i wonder is .. how big can one of these games actually get?

of course i have long long ways to go as i havnt started map custom pieces yet ‎  but anyhow xd.. ‎  keep postin all.. i love all the new ideas out there xdd

My games gonna be pretty big. Ill be re-using my songs in alot of maps, because music making takes time!

For seasons you'l need to ask the event kings - namely dmpdesign and hwtvlf. Ive not gotten into timers yet.

They are very nice ideas but dont forget that you'l need to have the map change in an easy way, for example the character sleeps and upon waking up finds its snow outside... Etc.

should be fairly simple really.. ‎  one way is to make a map of an area per season then just set the teleporter or transition into an area to the season.. the idea is that ur char would gain the ability from a diety or other source to change them at will to progress.. and the counters and if statements would direct the teleporter to warp you to the appropriate map. ‎  in theory i wouldnt need a timer unless i want the season to change without player influence.. i figure water would ice over in winter and plants would be ripe in summer ect

.. and yes i know what a pain in the butt timers are.. i ve use 2 already to limit the time a player can hold their breath under water and also to make a player fall in the water a few seconds before they are warped to the underwater areas as well as resetting a timer if u find an air pocket under water.. ‎  but im happy ‎  cause its teaching me a ton about the game making process.

Part of the idea and how it takes shape will of course be driven by the SoM limitations as well as lenght of time to create.. i figure it could take a few yrs to make an epic game but not thinking i wanna spend 10 years making it lol.. by then a sucessor of sorts to SoM may be avaliable or who knows what else. No wonder todays games have an entire staff to make them ‎  whew!! Sweatdrop

Yeah you dont realise how much effort goes into creating an in depth game. Though since i started making my own, ive found that i appreciate games more and enjoy seeing how they would have set up an environment or counter list etc.

Just to add something, and i mean no offence by this, but dont get in over your head with your game. Take things at a steady pace and if you've got a ton of ideas kicking around, write them down. The main reason i say this is because someone who had been making a game here stopped (we're pretty sure) because his game would have been too difficult to make.

Seasons wouldnt be though. ‎  Biggrin

Are you talkin abot me? lol, I gave up a long time ago but as you can see I returned. I've still got a few problems though but I'm still hangin around. I plan on getting at least a demo out before I decide to give up, lol. Hopefully by that time I'll be hooked into SoM too far to give up.

I suspect Mr. Lastrega is who he's referring to. Madison accomplished a lot of impressive things,
but I think he was a perfectionists and got discouraged from trying to accomplish too much.
I think that's a natural part of trying to create a game, and its important to balance what
you hope to accomplish with the reality of how much effort it takes to produce a game by yourself.

sirtuftcat, have you seen the 'pumpkin paster' tool posted in the forum here? It has a Piece-shifting
feature that could help you with your seasonal changes. It lets you select a block on your map and
'shift' all the map tile piece numbers higher or lower. For example, if you use the outdoor set for spring,
you could make a retextured 'autumn' outdoor set, copy the map, then 'shift' the Pieces on the copy
