the game runs great on my old win98 machine

have you tried running windows compatibility mode on the .exe?

no luck with any of the 4 options

Hi there :) I have an Nvidia video card too and I think the issue you're having started happening to me after one of Nvidia's driver updates. On my XP PC, it plays fine is you select the "... TL HAL" device under settings > options. If all else fails, you can set device to "RGB emulation".
