Oookay then. Thought I'd grab a video to prove my point/ ask what I'm doing wrong..and it finally fell after 15 minutes continuous moonlight magic spamming while ducking behind a face pillar 
As swordmaster level 22 with 84 magic stat. This was after a regular playthrough, not my speedrun experimentation file.
For reference my ps1 char can beat the final boss inside of a few minutes with the same magic stat, but level 26.
Ah well, I guess the speedrun dream will have to die for now. I don't wanna go through that or worse again!
