This caused me to actually fire up KF(1) on my PS3 (via PSN) ... I was surprised to see the black outlines around the fire were there. I kinda figured (from your vid) that was an artifact of emulation. One thing about the PS1 I think most (maybe all) emulators don't capture is dithering. That makes a world of difference.
PS: Was it just me, or does KF(1) seem lightning fast. It's like you're always running imo. KF has never been a game with a 180 turn combo, though DS might have that. The control difference BTW may just be because you're used to playing non-Japanese games which usually have their control scheme monkeyed with. Almost always the A and B buttons are flipped (so stupid) even to this day in Western ports of Eastern games. Only the more classy games buck that trend. It can be really annoying when your PS3 uses the A B scheme and you're playing a Region 1 game with the B A scheme. You'd think the PS3 being region free the games would have an API for detecting which layout you're using in this day and age, but per usual commercial software is pretty thoughtless in the user friendliness dept. I don't know which direction is "right" mind you. The history of that I suppose would be interesting. It's probably not a coincidence the cancel button (in Japan anyway) is an X on the PlayStation controller.
I remember KF games being pretty sluggish in terms of turning speeds back in the day. But whenever I play one today it seems like the turn speed is on crack. So I wonder if the slowness was only caused by the original PS1 clock speed, or maybe my sense of time has changed over the years.
