Love the character/artistry in the model from your link above. I hope I have the talent to make something that good in a game some day. An old poster I have has some info that might be pertinent to modeling armor.

One thing that modern games do (which I think could be improved) is to anchor the metal plate armor to the skin mesh- meaning the plate bends with the models skin. I understand the technical reasons they do it and it doesn't look horrible, but it's a missed opportunity add immersion and convey the stiffing reality of plate armor.
