No I did all that. I believe the bridge was probably there, but disappeared after it was built because I didn't use it. I may hop on again and try, but I was very thorough. It derailed my game so I ended up quitting.

You just keep pounding away on him and he'll die. Takes a while haha.

It sounds like your game just plain glitched up. ‎  I've heard that there's an NPC who won't help you if you've murdered anyone, but if you got the "I built a bridge for you" dialogue, it should be there, period.

You may have to restart the game. ‎  Fortunately this isn't really that far in (it may seem like it, but King's Field games are the kind that move a lot faster once you know where everything is--so something that took hours on your first go will take fifteen minutes on your second).
