Here i (and hopefully others) will be posting sources that might help developers with their games.

I know this might not seem true to 3d, but there are processes and inklings on this page that may help with armour creation.

That's a good resource for seeing how armor plates fit together. Covered armor joints like that would help hide the gaps in x2mdl's 'tinman' model joints. That guy has some massive skill to hammer that by hand.

Just figured I'd mention, if you're going for something realistic - don't make a design for female body armour that shows the breasts like you see everywhere(including the picture above). It's not exactly often that women have donned armour, but when they did, they generally wore the same armour as the men.

That's not the only reason though - a few months back I randomly read an article by an armour smith where he explained how such "boob plates," as he called them, would actually direct the sword, spear tip, arrow, whatever towards the center of the chest, instead of deflecting it off of the body, actually making it dangerous to wear in combat. As such, he never took on jobs making them for people who would actually use them for anything more than dressing up for events, and rarely even then.

In other words, it's about as effective as a chainmail bikini. ;)

Figured I'd share this tiny bit of info as I'm sure not everyone knows this, but it would be good to know for anyone thinking of starting a project where logic, history, and/or realism has a big impact on design decisions. If you're going for something that just looks cool and/or sexy though, go right ahead. (It's fantasy, after all! :D )

Armor is for wimps; Celtic men and women fought in the nude!

I doubt a woman ever seriously fought in battle during the age of Chivalrie. Female armor was more symbolic dress for leaders and it probably would have been considered lewd (not to mention inefficient) to have "breast cups".

Love the character/artistry in the model from your link above. I hope I have the talent to make something that good in a game some day. ‎  An old poster I have has some info that might be pertinent to modeling armor.

FULL SIZE

One thing that modern games do (which I think could be improved) is to anchor the metal plate armor to the skin mesh- meaning the plate bends with the models skin. I understand the technical reasons they do it and it doesn't look horrible, but it's a missed opportunity add immersion and convey the stiffing reality of plate armor.

Thats amazing. Ive downloaded it, hope you dont mind. Ive a book on how a knight equipped his armour by using a squire to attach the plates, after an undercoat and chainmail was worn. Must have taken ages just to get it on on the body.

I wouldnt fancy walking around in a suit of plate armour!

Theres a ton of amazing artwork on this website. I used to enjoy looking through the galleries when I first started modelling, but never truly appreciated the effort and majesty of the images until recently.
