MDO vs MDL

#1
Can you help me with a couple things?

I'd like to know if you can think of a single animated anything that uses a MDO file. I can't off the top of my head / am guessing MDO doesn't do animation.

Then I'd like to know if there is a single item that uses a MDL file. I can't think of anything. But if you can't either it would help to know if you can modify an item .prf file to reference a MDL file / get it to show up that way.

If you can use a MDL file for items. Then you might try using an npc MDL file and see if you can find any circumstances where the item plays back an animation (npcs have the most animations, none of which are ever skipped)

Do MDL files show up in itemedit I wonder? I left my thumbdrive with that on it in town, so I can't easily check that.

- Nope can't think of any animated thing that uses an MDO file. ‎  Pretty sure youre right, it wont be animated.
-I don't know of any item that uses an mdl either.
-I tried mdl in itemedit and no dice.

Well my dev machine is back in business so I will try some stuff out after I'm able to recuperate from the stress of a the fate of a 1200$ computer being up in the air / the two or three hours it took me to put this labyrinthian little machine back to one piece.

The drivers I downloaded flicker sometimes in Aero mode. Same model MXM module but apparently they have hardware IDs or something so Windows invalidated the drivers. I'm lucky to have drivers I suppose since the vendor is not supporting 7, but whatever drivers I ended up with after the 7 upgrade did not suffer from the problem and seemed to be just as good as the ones available on nvidia.com. I will find out if games etc. flicker or not soon enough.

I placed an order for a Zotac Zbox about a week ago so I'd have a backup if things went bad / in the future but have not heard any word of its arrival. Also added some adapters which I think will let me pipe KF2 thru the PS3 hdmi->dvi->dvi gender changer->vga->hmd (head mounted display) so I might have to cut back on my Jaseiken Necromancer intake.

That artwork is interesting. Looks like an undead Goro or... Whatever his MK species were.

^I bet you say that about all the monsters with more than two arms Evil

So it turns out anyway the Amazon.com Super Saver Shipping is really a scam. It says, "After your order ships, it will be delivered within 5-9 business days.", what it does not say is that your order may not ship for literally months!!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/...eId=527692

If I look at the estimated time of arrival for the computer I ordered it's like 2 months from now. I've been trying to find answers on the internet which seem to assure people that estimate is totally bogus and at most it will take about 17 days (which is still ridiculous) but anyway apparently Amazon withholds the right to keep your shit for like 2 or 3 months, maybe indefinitely if you choose Super Saver Shipping (which requires buying a lot of shit to even qualify for) so if you're like me and would buy things sometimes from Amazon for free shipping you probably want to think twice about what you're doing. The odds of me buying anything on Amazon just went down (and not even out of spite) about 80%. Good for you Amazon.

Anyway, the other stuff on that order Amazon shipped separately apparently sometime earlier today. So maybe in 3 to 5 days I can drown my sorrows in some KF2.

Also my inbox says I'm the proud papa of a 17$ (free shipping) Chinese/English copy of Demon's Souls (https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...0541569536)

EDITED: Errr, wait no, someone outbid me. Thought I got an email about that going thru. People must love the DS. And I just wanna find out if it's total crap or not Evil

All that really mattered to me was getting the good boxart. I'm not sure what versions got all the ugly boxart. And don't get me started on the BEST versions with the fugly yellow box with the boxart in a tiny square in the middle. Why anyone would buy those I wonder. Anyway DS seems to be holding really strong. Presumably because Atlus never prints enough copies. There is presently no US publisher for Armored Core 5 and no word of a current gen Megaten game in the works afaik.

Now back on topic....

once a year amazon will allow you to sign up for their 'amazon prime' shipping service to try it free for 30 days. ‎  I typically hold off until christmas time and get all my 2-day shipping free that way and then cancel in january, but if the shipping on this pc is a lot of money, it might be worth signing up for it now. ‎  Just be sure you cancel in 30 days (which is easy to do amazingly enough) and you'll be good to go.

I can't keep track of the few MDL/MDO threads floating around here. Anyway I've been a little slow picking things back up. ATM I think I'm working on getting the importer code accepted into the Assimp code repository... that will propagate Som support to all apps loading Assimp more or less.

In the meantime if anyone has an animated model they want to turn into a MDL file. I can work on that for you immediately under the following circumstances...

A) It's hard animation. That is like most of the NPCs except for the caped king and some others. Basically like a wooden puppet.

B) Each part of the animation only references one texture. That is you can't have some triangles using one texture and other triangles using another. This should work in the future but it's kind of out of my dept. Because support for this has just been added to Assimp and it's pretty loose. Assimp basically will decompose the mesh into submeshes per each material and the only way to put it back together is because the submeshes all share the same name. The only prob is almost no importers support mesh names afaik at this point. I will try to add support to .X at least at some point, but not at this time.

C) If you embed your control points inside meshes make sure they use the same materials. This is really same as B. You can also make them separate meshes but Som files almost never do so.

D) You will need to name your animations appropriately. Your format will have to support animation names. Or possibly if not you can try inserting dummy animations so they can just be counted. If anyone gets this far I will work with you on the naming part.
