Do the Som editor tools work well for you also?

Personally, I'm beginning to think whether things work well or not might be less about what version of Windows you are using and more about the quality of the display drivers installed on your system.

Either way in the long haul we/I intend to make this a non-issue altogether (eventually)

The only problem I have is that when I press Piece Setup in Map Editor sometimes it takes forever to open it and the 3D image is not present, although I have quite good stats (2 GB RAM, 1 GB Vcard Gforce GT 9400)

Well you are the first person I think we've heard from who is able to use the map editor under Windows Vista or 7. Usually most things don't show up in the 3D view of the map pieces.

maybe that's because of the high specs?

Well some things will show up, but not most. Afaik the piece preview never shows up in the top-right corner of the main screen. It has nothing to do with high specs. If anything older specs/drivers would have the best odds of working. If you have high quality display drivers they may support older versions of Direct X better.

I encountered a problem today. after placing an enemy on the map, the map editor doesn't allow me to test the map. It ignores the command.
Does this happen on other OSs?
