There are libraries for processing music. It's not as if people that score music for games have a clue how the games actually go about playing the music. I can program 3D graphics, it's all math, but that would not imply I'm the least bit capable as a 3D modeler (even though I happen to be)

99% of the time the people that do the art know nothing about the code that processes it and vice versa.

EDITED: Most musicians (in the west) are Christians. Christian music though is something different altogether, it's political basically. I can see how in black metal you might want to distance yourself from "practicing" pseudo-satanists or whatever, however calling yourself Christian I don't think is the route most people would take or want to take unless there was some ideology at work (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unblack_metal leave no stone unturned)

Btw, I'm just genuinely curious. I really don't understand Black Metal, it's hard to get into anyway, because I think your DNA must possess a unique gene that renders you immune to headaches. Other than the demonic throat singing and Tommy gun "riffs" in theory the scene doesn't seem antithetical to Christianity at all... maybe antithetical to Jesus. But since when has that ever stopped Christians... but yeah nothing wrong with throat sing Jesus Loves You with a vibrator fastened to your guitar Biggrin

If you're familiar with scales, sequencing music is all math as well. ‎  Both 3D graphics and music require a design factor, and apart from one dealing with angles and the other dealing with pitches, they're quite similar. ‎

Hguols is NOT "unblack" metal. ‎  I believe that genre term is a ridiculous concept. ‎  The term is coined from Horde's album "Hellig Usvart" (Norwegian for "Holy Unblack")
Basically some Christians started calling it "unblack metal" because they feel there is really no such thing as Christian black metal, since black metal is prominently satanic / anti-christian / etc.

The only difference between "unblack" and "black" is the lyrics.

With that logic blues music with happy lyrics would be "unblues" - ridiculous. ‎
That's my rant though.

As far as the black metal music in general, there is definitely a prominent "noise" factor, and an "atmosphere" factor. ‎
Some bands sound like distorted flamenco music with a symphony in the background.

Others sound like really crusty punk with dark melodies and an aggressive percussion section.

Either way, this genre of music scratches my itch better than any other style.
Death metal and classical/ambient are a close 2nd. ‎  (a few exceptions, but some black metal is a marriage between the two)

I wasn't insinuating anything about the music. I can get into Japanese (the most ridiculous) noise and am probably mostly into experimental/artrock so being amelodic is not my grief with black metal... there is just something about black metal as if it's meticulously designed to cause pain, and if taken for more than a few minutes would render any puny mortal psychically obliterated. Yes no doubt that is a sweeping generalization, but even with your Epitome it seems like it devolves into that breakneck monotonous piston "riff" by default (and yes I realize/think that's probably "The staple" of the genre)

Point you're missing about music or any art form. There are at least 3 angles. There is the medium itself, which is like science. There is the execution, which is like art, and there is enjoyment, ie. consumption. Without the last something doesn't qualify as art (it would be a field of study or something) and without the first there would be nothing... in the middle is the "talent" and will to create, but all three are distinct from one another. Eg. a person who enjoys music need not care how it's created. A person who makes music need not know how it works (many musicians play by ear) ...and a person who understands music need not have any talent in creating it. And the truth is the overlap between these disciplines (yes listening is a discipline) is really much less than you seem to think. The same goes for any artform. You have coaches, performers, and their audience, technicians, equipment designers and manufacturers, and the list goes on and on.

I posted this on a few other forums, and Barren Meadows posted it on their site. ‎  I might as well post this here!

"Well, after slaving away a lot of free time between February and March, I've got this sophomore album complete.

Hguols - Celestial Powers Intervened To True Supremacy
8 tracks - 43:52 running time

1- Destined to Find Sanctuary - 4:30
2- I Found the Essence of Darkness - 5:04
3- Within the Grip of Insanity - 4:34
4- All But Life Was Lost - 4:44
5- In This Exchange of Demise - 4:37
6- Celestial Powers Intervened - 7:12
7- My Eyes Have Opened - 4:37
8- To True Supremacy - 8:31

For those of you familiar with my MIDI work, I've done something a little different from Epitome - I'm utilizing soundfonts for a few of the instruments. The album will still be sequenced in a similar fashion, but for example, rather than a GM strings sound, a Campbell's cello is used instead. Rather than a GM distortion guitar, an Ilkka Palmroth's SG Electric Guitar through Zoom GFX-707 Guitar Effect Processor is used. The soundfonts bring not only a different sound, but a more realistic and lifelike approach to this project.

I guess the real meat and potatoes of this post is that the songs in bold in the above tracklist can be listened to at the Hguols myspace page, or at https://www.hguols.com
(though, they'll sound better at the dot com than the myspace streaming)

The CD will be available on Barren Meadows Recordings September / October 2010.
The digital release will be available in a few months.

Any and all question, comments and snide remarks are welcomed!

Thanks to all who are interested!"

After some contemplation, I'm going to do a cover song - the Hguols way. ‎

It will be a "single" type thing - just one track, digital release only and a FREE download.

Actually, I'm going to cover two songs, make it into one epic Hguols track. ‎
(my goal is to get this song in the 10 minute range)
I'm up for the challenge!

Anyone in here familiar with the Legacy of Kain - Soul Reaver games? ‎  I was going to cover the main themes of Soul Reaver 1 and Soul Reaver 2. ‎  If you're not familiar with the songs, (or are familiar and just need a little refresher) they're featured in these videos:

[flash=200,200]https://www.youtube.com/v/e54tu2XGfGU[/flash]

[flash=200,200]https://www.youtube.com/v/bDdh3vRD89k[/flash]

Once again, these songs will be redone in the typical Hguols grandiose and bombastic fashion.

The single will be called "Reaver of Souls", with the track affectionately entitled,
"Ozar Midrashim, Ariel's Lament"

When I'm done with the song (could be a week or so) I'll post it here for everyone.
