Actually the weapons hit length is determined in the .prf file for the weapon itself and is independant of the swing animation.
There is a pair of hexes you can modify near the end of the items .prf that will change the length of the weapon (why SOM didnt include this in an editable UI is beyond me). The first hex of the pair controls the 10ths and hundredths place of the length and the second number controls the length on the left side of the decimal point. I haven't quite determined how they scale the input hex number to the output length change but it takes a significant number to get something beyond the length of an average sword. The only way to really know how it is affected is to change the hexes, then load a game with the item in your inventory and see what it says the length is.
If DD 1.0.7 ever comes out it will have the adjusted spear length in it so that it actually hits enemies at its tip like it should.
You could in theory design a projectile weapon with this method by making a reallllly long length, but I imagine it would be hard to pull off any animation that made sense in the swing (unless holy knew how to develop a new one).
