SoM customs for dummies (A.K.A. scott)

#1
Alright, I've finally got SoM on my new laptop with minimal problems (at least the problems looked fixed for now...) and I'd like to learn how to make custom map parts, weapons, ect. I don't want to constantly ask people for customs because I'd feel really bad asking for things and not be able to return the favors. I'm kinda hesitant posting this as I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials that could maybe help me. I'm kinda looking for a "for dummies" type of guide(s) on making customs for SoM. I think this is one of the reasons why I left SoM last time too....
Yeah, I'm still around. I haven't much to say anymore however I do lurk around here. Ninja

Well, I've never used skype before and the only time I can use fast internet is when I'm using my laptop or at a library. I'm not comfortable using skype in public places like that but thanks for the offer. I got dial-up internet and no camera on my home computer so skype isn't an option there. Well, I'll go check out those tutorials now.

Do you have any 3D model making experience?

Personally, I don't mind questions or even dumb questions (I've asked plenty of those myself). If you come to a problem or something seems confusing just ask. I think the best way to learn is 'hands on', so I would say pick a simple custom part that you want to make and then we can guide you through the process.

Attached is an old 'how to' I made back in the early SoM days. It might still have something useful in it.

I will also try to support you any way I can.

Yet again, I got more problems. Ok, I was able to dowload the SoM tools and I had installed them along with the translation. I had made a crystal type of item and I followed the "how to" HwitVlf gave me. Here's the message I got when I tried to use x2mdo.exe:

"The program can't start because d3drm.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Ok then no big deal. Thats what I thought untill this message poped up:

"This program requires a missing windows component

check for a solution on the microsoft website. If a solution is available, there will be steps you can follow to fix the problem.

[then is says the program name, publisher and location]

this program requires d3drm.dll, which is no longer included in this version of windows."

What should I do next? This isn't gonna be easy for me to fix cause my laptop has SoM and the tools and the desktop I'm using now has a dial-up internet connection. I would be nice if someone could explain how to fix this for the next time I have ability to use a faster connection.
(with all these personal problems gettin in the way I'm surprised I'm still tryin to use SoM, lol)

https://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-f...html?d3drm
here it is and you should go a little down and find: Or you can Download d3drm.dll here

this is your dll file and you should put it in:
either ‎  ‎  ‎  C:\Windows\System32
or ‎  ‎  ‎  ‎  ‎  ‎  C:\Windows\SysWOW64
try both.

Had the same problem, added this file to my 'tools' folder and it worked fine.

Holy Diver gave me this info.

That d3drm.dll (Direct 3D Retained Mode) is part of DirectX. Microsoft stopped developing RM awhile back, but I guess they decided not to even include it in DX10. That means a bunch of older games are going to have that 'missing dll' message, but Microsoft has never really cared about backwards compatibility.

Creatura's or Verdite's solutions should both work, or installing the DirectX9 should work too.
Attached is the dll from my PC if you need it :) ‎
