  Trilogy's Rosetta Stone?
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2020-03-05, 12:23 AM - Forum: King's Field Series - No Replies

Foreword: I don't mean this to be read like a "conspiracy theory".

I think I've actually stumbled/worked on/out the likely inspiration behind much of King's Field's unique/weird idiosyncrasies?

Here (https://www.swordofmoonlight.net/bbs2/in...10#msg2810) is my most recent go at laying out the evidence, but I've been slowly picking up the pieces for a few weeks. Some of the elements I've had suspicions about for many years.

Earlier I wrote some of this up on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/KingsField/comm...ngs_field/

What I mean to suggest is that whoever was behind the deep structure of the King's Field world/story was working primarily from this material all along. These topics may seem esoteric but I actually think they are relatively mainstream as these things go. They draw from Carl Jung's adventures probing his own unconscious and dreams and well-trodden elements of Kabbalah (the mainstream Jewish mystical tradition) that feature in a lot of other Japanese anime and video games from the same period. I think new-age books on these topics would have littered Japanese bookstores for much of the post-war period. They would have seemed very exotic and hard to resist I think... like illustrated books on extraterrestrials or anything like that.

EDITED: I don't want to suggest that I disapprove of this. I'm making a case for its likelihood. I actually think it's quite beautiful/apropos. What sent me down this rabbit hole was YouTube recommend I listen to David Bowie's Station to Station (usually thought his de facto masterpiece) that is a tour of the sefirot that I explain more of in these links.

KF1 SOM version keeps crashing after intro video

Just like the Subject says, for some reason after the opening video, it just crashes to desktop. I managed to get it to load up once, but that was it...not sure what the problem is.

Posted by: JC Bailey - 2020-03-01, 07:45 PM - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

As some of you may have heard, bots have been destroying som.com and the site owner doesn't care much to deal with it - I wouldn't either. So we'd much prefer if everyone joined the Discord server to discuss SOM & King's Field from now on, as I have been maintaining it on a daily basis. We have sections for King's Field & SOM discussion, game promo, as well as a place where all the site's download links are kept. Although som.com won't be closing anytime soon, who's to say how much longer it will remain alive at this point, so come join us!

If the link is broken, PM JC Bailey - or better yet, PM @JC_Bailey1112 on Twitter for a much faster reply.

Proper size and orientation from Blender to SoM
Posted by: theschap - 2019-05-11, 04:56 AM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (23)

First off, hello everyone! I have been a From Software fan since Dark Souls. I never played the King's Field games until a couple years ago when I dove into KFIV. While I really enjoyed the atmosphere and exploration side of it, I found the movement to be pretty painful and haven't finished it. I've been into Playstation 1 era graphics for a while and trying to incorporate them into my own Unity based projects, but a friend mentioned SoM and here I am. I have really enjoyed messing with the tools and seeing how the pieces fit together and recently started going down the path of custom assets.

Here is the workflow I have been using as of late and getting predictable results from Blender 2.8 into SoM. There are several paths through this, but this has been working for me when doing objects and tiles so far.

Quick facts:

  • 1m in Blender = 1m in SoM. Yay!
  • Tiles in SoM are often 2m X 2m X 3m
  • A side wall will then be 1m X 2m X 3m
  • A floor tile 2m X 2m X 3m
  • Black in a texture will show up transparent

  1. Before exporting a model from Blender make sure all transforms have been applied and then cleared.

  2. I exported as .obj with the following settings. Not all are needed, but things were working so I didn't bother to dig.

  3. I then open the .obj in Metasequoia LE with the following settings:

  4. Before saving this as a .x make sure your texture is applied, and referenced from the .../mqle24/Texture folder.

  5. Now save as .x with these settings:

  6. There is a post by JC Bailey that I used a lot https://www.swordofmoonlight.com/bbs/ind...opic=930.0 he recommended having a 'Converstions' folder with all the texture files, .x files, and converters. I used the 'SoMHelper' for a lot of my conversions and I'm not sure if you need the files in the same location as the conversion executables when using that, or just for the console commands. The 'SoMHelper' seemed fine with just loading a .x into it, and as long as the texture was in the mqle24/Texture directory all was good.

This was meant to be a blender started workflow tutorial. Things I didn't flesh out here are fleshed out very well here: https://www.swordofmoonlight.com/bbs/ind...opic=710.0

Feel free to comment about things I missed, or flat out got wrong, or would like more explanation and I will try to help.

If anyone is interested I could also share the placeholder box, and wall segment features in the video below that I've been using for greyboxing and getting a feeling for how things are laid out.

Brigandine Grand Edition: The Campaign Completed, Iscalio
Posted by: Isralyn - 2019-04-28, 02:32 AM - Forum: Brigandine: Grand Edition - No Replies

I didn't think it would be the case but Iscalio has turned out to be one of my favorite campaigns. ‎  - https://youtu.be/a7N8-WpBnh8

They have enough knights for barely 4 teams and there are 2 knights below level 10 so getting attacked on the defense front by Esgares or Caerleon is a very real problem and I had to fight them off a few times.. Luckily those difficult battles are super fun to play and interesting to watch. ‎

Aside from that weakness Iscalio is able to suit up a strong offensive force and quickly get the needed Unicorns and Angels from the invasion of Leona. ‎  All around a good time! ‎

Here is a link to the full English patched game with the PsX Emulator that I use: https://drive.google.com/open?id=17Xb... ‎  If you're interested in competing here's the speedrun.com page ‎

KF2US - What do Black Jewel and Wind Necklace do?
Posted by: EdmondDantes - 2019-04-17, 09:52 AM - Forum: King's Field Series - Replies (2)

So since the developers got dumb and didn't give KF2US an equivalent of Meryl, and isntead a "Guide" function which only has information when it feels like it, I have two equippable things which I have no idea what they do. ‎  Specifically the two things in the topic title, which I got both in the cave with all the stone golems and the skeleton that asks you to kill them before he'll move a rock.

I kinda think this is silly that you can't reliably just ask someone what things do like you could in KF1US.

But yeah, I equipped these things but I'm not sure I notice them actually doing anything, except maybe minor stat variations. ‎  And I'm not sure how to make descriptions show up in the in-game guide you access by pressing triangle. ‎  Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks.

Does Shadow Tower PS1 have multiple endings?
Posted by: EdmondDantes - 2019-04-11, 10:03 PM - Forum: King's Field Series - Replies (13)

So... Shadow Tower's ending doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Is there another one? ‎  Cuz I mean, you're here to save some town, but now the game says I'm after a magic crown or something? ‎  And the town isn't even mentioned? ‎  Huh?

Related.... I notice the game actually tells you how many monsters are in the tower and keeps count of how cleared each area is. ‎  Has anyone ever 100% cleared every area in the tower? ‎  I tried this, and almost succeeded, but there's one last monster in the Screeching Area that simply refuses to spawn and I'm not sure if something triggers it, or if the game is bugged.

Do you get anything for 100% clearing the tower?
