OT. Anyone ever try RPG Maker XP |

Anyone ever hear of it? I was looking around yesterday after reading a post about other map editors and came across it. It seems pretty cool but is $60 to by the license which isn't too bad. There are alot of map tiles in there and looks likt you could create a game along the lines of FF and other turn based RPG games. Looks like it'd take AOLT of work as there are no real forums for it and the help feature is horrible.
Each "map" you create can only support 1 "tileset" so you'd have to make a zillion maps for a large game.
Just wondering.

Ok, after fiddling around with SoM last night I've run into a few things I need help with. For my first question:
How is damage added up? I need to know this so all the enimies aren't 1 hit kills and so you don't die from one hit from them.
I'm sure I'll have many more questions very soon and will post them in this topic.

Seriously now (we can always edit this top post)
I made this thread to define SOM terms (the English terms which we choose to use as a community)
This isn't necessarily the definitive glossary as such, though wherever that is established (on the main website somewhere) should basically be reflected in this thread (edited into the top post -- possibly with a link to the main website for a complete list)
John's work is amazing, no disrespect, but I think it's more important we all work this out together. If John's version of SOM was the only version, I would just leave it to him. But I think down the road there will be many spinoffs of SOM and the groups of tools for this niche of games would ideally all share the same lingo.
It's better to address this asap rather than retconning it further down the line. This thread will also help people keep up with any changes in terms and hopefully minimize confusion.
That said, I would like to make some proposals to get started, but I want everyone to take this seriously and combine our collective knowledge to make sure no influential aspects of SOM are left out.
To begin with, many terms used by SOM are influenced by the original filetree folder names (I'm assuming John has not changed these) ...these would include enemy, item, map, menu, my, npc, obj, sfx, sound. It's probably not worth changing the names of these folders, or the names of things stored in them (so to avoid any confusion) ...but I would not completely put this off the table. There will be other non-English translations and Japanese should never be the authority on English matters.
There are also limitations upon the number of letters in a name dictated by the original PE (exe/dll) images. This may or may not be a limitation in the future after a proper translation regime is established. For the games it isn't, but GDI/resource widgets might be a different story (probably not however)
Anyway, basically what I can bring to this discussion is knowledge of proper technical terminology. We could decide to go a more domesticated route considering the audience for SOM developers is not necessarily technically minded people. But still some of the terms currently in use are technically incorrect.
This thread isn't about me though, I really want everyone to talk about this, because the translation possibilities are going to start opening up, and the website is going to start undergoing changes which will mean copying over a lot content to a different system, which would be a good time to change the way things are talked about on the main site. Nevertheless it's never too early to address such matters. Possibly we can even come to some consensus before John releases another round of his translation patches...

Locking warp point until |

I haven't tried it yet as I've had to take a week off from ym project but have been THINKING alot about what I want the game to be. Like I've said before, I want to structure it around how Diablo 2 is made. I would like each map to be it's own "area" in the game and only accessable to the next area via killing the main boss at the end of each map. I'm assuming it would be possible by having the final boss drop an object that will unlock the warp point?
Another quetions I have, how do I make the map that is viewable when you find the "map" for the board? I want to have a book or scoll on each map that once found, will show the map of the entire "area" you are on.
Lastly, I never played KF and found SOM and just wanted to make a game as I think it's really cool and would love to have the gratification of hopefully having other people enjoy what I've made. If my game doesn't follow any of the KF series, would it still be something people would be willing to play?

I want to truely beat the game 100% so if anyone could answer my questions that would be great.
Question #1. My strength is well above 50 and no matter how often I talk to Lord Veyrac he never teaches me the sword magics. How do I learn them?
Question #2. I've gotten the Triple Fang but the blade is only one part. (it shows it as 3 parts on kings-field.neocities.org) Is there a way to unlock it or something?

I have so many questions I can't seem to find the answers for in the SoM guide, so I have took the libery of creating this thread.
Q.? I have this idea of creating a NPC that once you have healed him, he'll give you a map.
? ? ? I'm guessing I go into 'EVENT LEAF SETUP', but from there I get lost :(
... also, what is all this talk of 'counter'? example "Set Player Parameter In Counter"
Thanks

I'm was working with a friend of mine who knows olot more about software than I do, I'm the wise one. He's the intelligent one, (4 degrees from M.I.T.) . So i asked him if he would look at
a project of mine, SoM, but when he looked at it he started looking at the programming of it not my map, GeeZ i just wanted some advice on the map not how to fix the game. Anyhow he thinks he might be able to Alter another map editor to work with SoM. he's comming back tomorrow to work with me again. I have my doubts but i'll see what he comes up with. I would like to build 3D maps instead of 2D because most of my ideas are severly limited by this editor but i wont give up on Kings Field EVER, and I will finish this game. it takes about a week and a half for me to do a level. Let me know if you have any ideas about this. (Like if somebody has already tried this. Thanks.
P.S. I'm going to look at the controller issues myself Grrrrr.

I'm a fan of the KF games and recently found this place. From what I've seen so far it seems like the SoM program is a very complex task. I'd like to use SoM but I have no knowlage of computer programs. So back to the basic question: Is SoM something I could use?
