For the record, the first edition of Dark Destiny is going to have some extensions setup which will allow players to fully enjoy the game from an optical drive (cdrom or dvd) and fixes a bug which made Som crawl to very very low FPS if your save game folder happened to be on an external drive (USB or network etc.)
You can maybe make it do other tricks if you get a hold of some documentation for the extension ini files. I think we're trying to focus on better delivering the movies, but I've moved on to focusing on the translation feature which will make it very easy to translate all Som games into any language and make use of Unicode. As soon as that work is finished there will be a website setup where anyone can go to help translate games collaboratively like a wiki (or privately if desired) The website will be basically like an online version of poedit. Anyone can download the translation file and add it to their game at any point along the way. It can't be any easier than that PS: Translation support is 99% there but the last 1% of text is made trickier because it turned out that Som uses an internal library for sprintf() functionality for Shift_JIS text (instead of the Windows API) ...So I'm having to implement the menu doctoring extension earlier than expected (or at least half of it) so that messages can be decomposed and reconstructed. The simplest example is the status conditions display in the menu. Instead of translating every possible combination of "bad status conditions" the conditions need to be broken up so they can be translated one at a time then put back together to be printed on the screen. For that you need a representation of the menu built in (which is what's taking a little longer... that and having stopped to focus on DD for some time) EDITED: Oh yeah, the tool suite that dumps (preps for translation) the text from any game in .po (gettext) format was finished ages ago.

^update: I was discussing fonts with Todd yesterday and afterward at some point I realized getting the right font to the player was a real hurdle for Som games. Luckily it only took a few minutes to add an extension that privately adds font files to the font table while the game is playing. So the fonts are never installed on the player's machine. The default behavior is too add any files in a folder called 'font' in the PROJECT.DAT folder. The 'font' folder compliments the 'lang' folder for localization.
Now people who download your game from anywhere won't have any font related hassles or end up playing with some ugly generically selected font. If btw anyone is on the verge of releasing a game, get in touch with Todd so your game can have the same treatment as DD.

If anyone wants to fill out a file like the one I've attached to this post (looks like below) I can immediately turn that into a translated version of any game. All that is except for the built-in menu text which can be Japanese or English (in a matter of weeks the menus should be fully translatable)
I think Todd would like to see Dark Destiny translated into Japanese as soon as possible (if possible) also. If you just want to translate a little bit to see how it goes that's ok to. I will upload a translation file for any game that I can. I can also post the tool I have that generates that file if anyone wants it (I think it will be on John's website any day) PS: Dumping your text this way is also very handy if you need to proofread what you have. You can search thru it / spell check it / generally have an easy time reading everything from top to bottom. And the comments should be enough to easily find the text in the editing tools so you can correct it. #: FILE PARAM\OPENNING.DAT #: SCREEN[00] msgid "It is the ancient land of Maunstraut." msgstr "" msgid "The land's crown, Lord Schnell's diadem" msgstr "" msgid "of power to ward evil, has become brittle." msgstr "" #: CRLF msgid "The time has come for its renewal." msgstr "" msgid "That time must arrive soon." msgstr "" #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF msgid "...lest the realm drown in pestilence." msgstr "" #: SCREEN[01] msgid "As the crown cracks, evil brings death" msgstr "" msgid "and despair to all." msgstr "" #: CRLF msgid "The King will send a royal servant by " msgstr "" msgid "mystic's spell to scour the land " msgstr "" msgid "for a cure." msgstr "" #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF #: CRLF msgid "A deed as difficult as it is deadly." msgstr "" #: SCREEN[02] msgid "Darkness envelopes the world leaving plagues" msgstr "" msgid "of undead and demonic creations." msgstr "" #: CRLF msgid "Zeir Grimholdt steps forward to fight" msgstr "" msgid "against the evil.? You can download Exgettext here (https://jdo-translations.100webspace.net...t_v0.2.zip) ...there is also a writeup on John's download page if you can find it. When I give John the source code (I forgot it in this package) I will give him a better brief description to advertise the tool/s with.
Exgettext is basically a text dump for your game/project. It works just like xgettext (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gettext) only for Som games. Since the files it handles are binary for the most part it's not as straight forward as xgettext, so the Exgettext.bat file makes it more xgettext-like. The .pot extension is really a generic one... it stands for "portable object template" which just means it's a template for a .po file (portable object, ie. a text file) which corresponds to a .mo file (machine object, ie. a binary file -- which is dependent upon its targeted machine architecture) To make a .po file you more or less just wanna copy the .pot file and change the name to .po and start translating it into your language. Not generally a big deal.

^FYI: John tells me his host provider blocks referrals so you will have to copy the link into your browser's address bar or look for it on this page (https://jdo-translations.100webspace.net...ads.html#2)
> Mr. DMPDesign
I tell your praise to Sanagi Kagura, who is the designer of Nekomimi's Field. Surely he will work hard at development with pleasure. > Mr. Holy Diver Thank you very much for your work for collaboration. But your posts are considerably large volume and high level for me. I can still understand a little your suggestion now. Please do not be offended. I am translating your posts hard now, and will reply sequentially. > the first edition of Dark Destiny ... My save game folder for DD (V1.05) is on internal HDD, but often it works slow. Maybe it because memory leaks from my subper machine. I cannot buy the new machine for the time being..... > some documentation for the extension ini files ... Where are them? Included SoM installation CD? The site of Mr.John? Tutrial pages of here? > anyone can go to help translate games collaboratively like a wiki ... Wonderful! My work is very slow, but I'd like to cooperate in the thing I can do. I cannot open the file of DD manual directly, because I don't have Word 2007. Then I converted it to text file with a free tool. I am going to translate the text to Japanese for me. When work is completed, I will provide it to players of Japan. But the work takes time, the expression is difficult. "Vallad of the earth, had a lot of worries." <-- Current progress > For that you need a representation of the menu built in ... Should I translate all patterns of "bad status conditions"? If I can have original English text, I translate it. > get in touch with Todd so your game can have the same treatment as DD ... It is only Mr. Usual Dark that develops with SoM now. If it is necessary to replace some file, I send a message to him in it. > I think Todd would like to see Dark Destiny translated into Japanese as soon as possible ... > You can download Exgettext here ... I tried it, and opened a text file "GAME.exe.pot" made with that tool. Very nice! Cool! I understood that I wrote Japanese in the next line of the English sentence to see this. However, there is not time to do it today. I'm sorry.

I will use the gettext stuff sometime this week so the translation can be done.
I will grab the text from the manual and convert it to notepad or wordpad or something that you can open easier. As for the memory leaks, maybe I will release a Dark Desinty Lite so that it is not as hard on your computer.
