  Moving NPCs via Events
Posted by: MaskedGamer - 2009-07-31, 02:22 PM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (6)

Sorry to make another topic but I'm having problems getting an event to work. ‎  I want to move an NPC via the "Move NPC" event command but it only works temporarily. ‎  I can move an NPC halfway across the map or just to the next space over but as soon as I move away for a distance, the NPC returns to it's original position. ‎  Have I set the NPC placement settings incorrectly for a move to be permanent or does the command not work like I think it does?

  No Hardware Acceleration? Help
Posted by: Wrexsoul - 2009-07-18, 09:00 AM - Forum: Trismegistus - Replies (6)

Sorry for posting this here but i cannot found a issues section.

I downloaded Trismegistus and the installation goes fine. Clicked the EXE and the game opened normally, showed the intro, start menu, more intro scene, then... in the in-game play i was unable to move and everything seems stopped! But i can hear the background music and as able to enter tab menu. There i checked System tab and realised the DEVICE tab was empty. Tried to set something and RGB EMULATION is the only option.

I think my video card driver wasn't been detected by the game engine. My system is an Athlon 64 3200+, Radeon 9600 with latest catalyst drivers, WinXP and DX9.

Trismegistus.ini shows DEVICE=0 and I changed to 1 but no effect. Also i tried Win98 compatibility mode and nothing... ‎

This never happened before with any other 3D game in my system. What can I do?

Sorry for my english!

  Known forum issues...
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-07-16, 03:40 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (71)

In lieu of a gen/meta discussion forum, here is a rundown (or checklist) of issues with the new forums. All of this is stuff I will fix, and pretty much did not foresee (bug wise) ...I will try to list as much as possible though, and basically in terms of priority.

*Phones it in... the default message icon should be "says" ...not sure what is going on here, but I will figure it out asap (FYI: Phones it in, should be for mobile/WAP originating posts)
*In general the "Message Icon" system is not working correctly. and still needs some attention. Once it's working correctly I will set all the previous existing messages to "says". FYI: I programmed this newspaper-like behavior into this theme myself. Basically because the avatars need to be on the right, it helps you stay better oriented.

*Ads are scheduled to be removed.
*Need to find smiley's to match the old forum's. Also need to reorder and break into two rows the posting smiley layout.
*Need to find out how to incorporate the old "Dagger Carrier", "Bow Bearer", etc. theme. Currently you can see what you are by hovering over your stars. Also many of the higher level ranks still have phpBB prefixes.
*Need to find out why Todd's account does not show up as an administrator with 5 red stars (he does apparently have admin powers)
*The place could probably use a bot/spam cleanup. The new forum is OCR protected, but some more sophisticated bots have been breaching this "captcha" algorithm lately.
*I'm aware PM pages look funny. This is just something that doesn't seem important enough forum wise to goof around with anytime soon.
*The banner graphics are temporary (on short notice) We can do better. Need a unique background.
*Need a gen/meta discussion forum.
*Need to make sure everyone has access to the private forums. And we might need a better way of granting access, because the current system probably doesn't work right if a user is not already an admin/moderator.
*Need to better hide/lockdown the old forums.
*Need to add anything to this list that has been left out...

  Do ads make any sense?
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-07-16, 02:19 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (9)

First off this forum really needs a gen. discussion board, or at least a meta board for discussing the other boards...

But anyway, this post is about ads. Todd wants me to pull the Google adds that are baked into the theme. It's not a prob, but I thought I'd put it to a poll first.

First off my position. Being all, "ads are commercial man, and they make the internet ugly," is so 20th century. First off the ads are fun and often interesting, especially when targeted better than they are atm. They're using up empty space with nothing to put there... though maybe some day SoM game ads could be placed in the same space.

But mostly websites don't run on moonbeams and faeriedust, and considering this website doesn't have a business model and is probably already costing money for someone, I don't see how they are really hurting anyone. Even if once your site starts scaling, and donations seem like they're sufficient, even people with no money to spare can still help support the site, by the simple act of converting their attention into Google backed cash. And let me tell you, I thought ads worked on like a fraction of a penny at at time. But just today, two ads were clicked on this account that totaled 2.34$. Google payed more than a dollar for just one measly click (and that is during the flailing economy, which has driven down the value of ads several fold)

Anyway, the real purpose of this poll is to find out why people really don't like ads. And ultimately is it really necessary to pull them...

disclaimer: This is not a democratic website at this time afaik. Todd has the final say, but I'd just like to see some opinions aired before I go digging in the theme code to flip them off.

PS: The ads won't show up on PM pages, so you don't have to worry about Google reading your PMs. Also Google runs public service announcements, and it's just text, no graphics will ever popup. And I've never seen any sleazy ads on Google.

  Fences and Books
Posted by: MaskedGamer - 2009-07-16, 01:43 AM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (14)

Hello, first post, nice to meet you all.

Anyways, I managed to purchase a copy of SoM online the other day and after a few days of thinking and fooling around, I've come up with a game I'd like to make. ‎  The only thing is, I need a fence or something similar for one of my maps. ‎  I remember in KF3 there were some low broken walls that could be used as a fence but I don't recall seeing them in the map editor. ‎  I tried using the invisible wall piece in the map editor but that overwrites the ground tile. ‎  I've tried using an object, like the iron bars, as a fence but whenever you activate the iron bars, they act like a door so that's out. ‎  Does anyone have an ideas? ‎  Am I using the invisible wall the wrong way?

Eventing out the iron bars might be possible but that would use up a bit of event space, I think.

I'm also looking for a book object/item. ‎  This Japanese site (https://www.mscom.or.jp/bowcat/SofM/index.html) has a few books available but the links are dead. ‎  Going through the Internet Archive lets you download the water texture but the books are still dead. ‎  Are there any free books available?

  x2mdo.exe (d3drm.dll)
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-07-05, 11:05 PM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (49)

Has anyone been able to make x2mdo.exe work? It seems to want "d3drm.dll" (legacy retained mode dx) which doesn't exist on most systems these days apparently. I downloaded one copy of d3drm.dll from the internet and stuck it in the same folder with x2mdo.exe... now I get no error message, but nothing happens when running the exe...

  Cheating
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-07-05, 02:04 AM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (8)

I just realized it's possible to change to a light weapon, swing it, then change back to a heavy weapon in order to quickly feel up your swing gauge.

I think as soon as I start hacking SoM this is one of the first things I'll put a stop to Twisted

Do we know any other ways of cheating?

VMWare Player may be a solution to the editor crashing
Posted by: dmpdesign - 2009-07-01, 07:10 PM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (70)

Since it had earlier been suggested to me to try Windows Virtual PC to remedy the issues some folks (including myself) have with running SOM editors on vista/xp with certain graphics cards and such I figured I would look into it.

My version of windows vista wasnt good enough to install Virtual PC, so I have looked into the next best thing...VMWare.

VMWare offers a free player that acts much like what I would assume Virtual PC can accomplish, the trick is having the VM application to run the windows install youre looking for...cuz its not free to have VMServer to create one.

It just so happens we have a copy of VM Server where I work and I have been able to create a windows XP SP3 appliance for use with VMWare Player...so this week I plan on finding a way to get that 5 gig file home to monkey with it on my vista machine and see if it can make editing SOM on that machine less of a chore.

I will post my results here, and if they are positive, will also host the VMWare appliance so everyone that needs it can download it and use it.

Anyone have the damage parameters down to a science??
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-05-28, 08:39 AM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (48)

When it comes to adjusting bells and whistles, I prefer to approach matters from a more deterministic angle... but so far my piddling with this side of SoM has felt more like an art form than anything I can pin down. And this scares me, because I know I can't do an entire game this way.

For something like exp, it's easy. Give the simplest monster one exp, and all others are a multiple of that.

But what does one damage mean? Is it linear? Ultimately, all such systems have mathematical formulas, which are usually very ham handed at that. Are we even close to defining SoM's behavior formulaically? Has anyone done such required experiments?

At the least, I'd like to take this moment to file a formal application for any and all advice from those in the trenches Twisted

  Neo Under etc.
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-05-24, 03:55 AM - Forum: SOM Games General - Replies (3)

Should we list all the Japanese games online etc, or even make backups of them in case they disappear?

I've played a bit of them in the past, but I just downloaded / ran thru Neo Under (just running places without killing) ...it seemed like a massive labyrinth with little structure, but I did notice a number of interesting pieces we don't have afaik. If we couldn't get source code (read: .prf files) ...do you think we could construct our own pieces/objects from the game files somehow?

^Edited: I don't want to suggest that any asset appearing in a SoM game is open-game of course. But should we even try to tap into whatever Japanese community might still remain / be revivable?
