  Fences and Books
Posted by: MaskedGamer - 2009-07-16, 01:43 AM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (14)

Hello, first post, nice to meet you all.

Anyways, I managed to purchase a copy of SoM online the other day and after a few days of thinking and fooling around, I've come up with a game I'd like to make. ‎  The only thing is, I need a fence or something similar for one of my maps. ‎  I remember in KF3 there were some low broken walls that could be used as a fence but I don't recall seeing them in the map editor. ‎  I tried using the invisible wall piece in the map editor but that overwrites the ground tile. ‎  I've tried using an object, like the iron bars, as a fence but whenever you activate the iron bars, they act like a door so that's out. ‎  Does anyone have an ideas? ‎  Am I using the invisible wall the wrong way?

Eventing out the iron bars might be possible but that would use up a bit of event space, I think.

I'm also looking for a book object/item. ‎  This Japanese site (https://www.mscom.or.jp/bowcat/SofM/index.html) has a few books available but the links are dead. ‎  Going through the Internet Archive lets you download the water texture but the books are still dead. ‎  Are there any free books available?

  x2mdo.exe (d3drm.dll)
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-07-05, 11:05 PM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (49)

Has anyone been able to make x2mdo.exe work? It seems to want "d3drm.dll" (legacy retained mode dx) which doesn't exist on most systems these days apparently. I downloaded one copy of d3drm.dll from the internet and stuck it in the same folder with x2mdo.exe... now I get no error message, but nothing happens when running the exe...

  Cheating
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-07-05, 02:04 AM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (8)

I just realized it's possible to change to a light weapon, swing it, then change back to a heavy weapon in order to quickly feel up your swing gauge.

I think as soon as I start hacking SoM this is one of the first things I'll put a stop to Twisted

Do we know any other ways of cheating?

VMWare Player may be a solution to the editor crashing
Posted by: dmpdesign - 2009-07-01, 07:10 PM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (70)

Since it had earlier been suggested to me to try Windows Virtual PC to remedy the issues some folks (including myself) have with running SOM editors on vista/xp with certain graphics cards and such I figured I would look into it.

My version of windows vista wasnt good enough to install Virtual PC, so I have looked into the next best thing...VMWare.

VMWare offers a free player that acts much like what I would assume Virtual PC can accomplish, the trick is having the VM application to run the windows install youre looking for...cuz its not free to have VMServer to create one.

It just so happens we have a copy of VM Server where I work and I have been able to create a windows XP SP3 appliance for use with VMWare Player...so this week I plan on finding a way to get that 5 gig file home to monkey with it on my vista machine and see if it can make editing SOM on that machine less of a chore.

I will post my results here, and if they are positive, will also host the VMWare appliance so everyone that needs it can download it and use it.

Anyone have the damage parameters down to a science??
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-05-28, 08:39 AM - Forum: SOM Guides, FAQ and Help - Replies (48)

When it comes to adjusting bells and whistles, I prefer to approach matters from a more deterministic angle... but so far my piddling with this side of SoM has felt more like an art form than anything I can pin down. And this scares me, because I know I can't do an entire game this way.

For something like exp, it's easy. Give the simplest monster one exp, and all others are a multiple of that.

But what does one damage mean? Is it linear? Ultimately, all such systems have mathematical formulas, which are usually very ham handed at that. Are we even close to defining SoM's behavior formulaically? Has anyone done such required experiments?

At the least, I'd like to take this moment to file a formal application for any and all advice from those in the trenches Twisted

  Neo Under etc.
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-05-24, 03:55 AM - Forum: SOM Games General - Replies (3)

Should we list all the Japanese games online etc, or even make backups of them in case they disappear?

I've played a bit of them in the past, but I just downloaded / ran thru Neo Under (just running places without killing) ...it seemed like a massive labyrinth with little structure, but I did notice a number of interesting pieces we don't have afaik. If we couldn't get source code (read: .prf files) ...do you think we could construct our own pieces/objects from the game files somehow?

^Edited: I don't want to suggest that any asset appearing in a SoM game is open-game of course. But should we even try to tap into whatever Japanese community might still remain / be revivable?

  The Maunstraut 2009 Project
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-05-18, 03:24 AM - Forum: SOM Games General - Replies (30)

With permission I am in the process of reworking Tom Eversole's Maunstraut (and would love any help btw)

As the first fully featured proper Sword of Moonlight game created outside Japan (in English -- to further qualify) I really want to give this game a proper legacy...

Hopefully this will be only the first reiteration of DoM (Diadem of Maunstraut)

I'm going to use this thread for now to just post working screenshots to get everyone excited. I'm a fairly busy person, and this is not my only SoM contribution I've on my plate. Eventually I will release an Alpha version of the game, which will require extensive play testing, just get solid errors out of the way, as I'm sure there will be many due to the half hazard way I'm approaching this.

With errors out, I will sign off on a Beta version, which Todd will hopefully host on swordofmoonlight.com's front page. The Beta version will likely be the version everyone who is eager to will get to play. I won't declare a non-beta version until I'm able to implement everything I intend to with this version of Maunstraut.

I seriously doubt this version will be my last version -- and I hope others will take this work and do their own thing with it... or just generally pitch in and make this open source version of Maunstraut an ever evolving deal.

----------------------------------

I will kick this off with the first public screenshot. You will have to click the link for now, but Todd is setting me up an FTP login, and I will inline the image in the future...

FYI: For anyone who wants to give the project a spin as currently is, there is always a fairly regular ~5MB backup here( https://anon.swordofmoonlight.com/holy/dom/M09_mini.zip )

^You will need to understand SoM and have Todd's devkit to try it however (and the original DoM music and splash screen files wouldn't hurt either)

  Anyone still playing?

Is anyone still playing this?

I havent gotten my copy back yet so I likely wont be playing it again for quite some time.

might deactivate this thread if there is no news for this game.

Pushing back release date a bit
Posted by: dmpdesign - 2009-05-12, 02:16 PM - Forum: Dark Destiny - Replies (6)

Due to me wanting to work out the bugs in the map set that I released earlier, along with adding CG in game videos, I am pushing back the release by a few weeks, so likely I wont be sending out a testable version of the game until late June. I will still try to get the final game done by the end of July.

  Echo Night anyone?
Posted by: Holy_Diver - 2009-05-06, 08:29 AM - Forum: King's Field Series - Replies (10)

I'm half considering purchasing the Echo Night games (1 and 2) on the Japanese PSN. I've never played them (not a fan of the puzzle genre - or puzzles in games in general) so I'm wondering if anyone can recommend them (or not)
